Education
1994 - One year post-secondary studies of English at the MKM Language
School and Translation Agency in Brno. Passed the State English
language examination.
2000 - Completion of studies at the Palacky University in Olomouc,
Department of English and Applied Economics. Passed the State
examination in English & Economics with Distinction. These classes
were taught by lecturers from Great Britain, USA and South Africa. My
Thesis on a financial theme was written in English.
Experience
I started translating during my studies at the Palacky University
- these were occasional (often unpaid) translations. After
graduation, I lived for some time in England and Ireland.
After my return to the Czech Republic, I was in daily English
telephonic and written contact with foreign customers of the company I
worked for. At work, I did translation as a sideline, but due to
a busy schedule I did not have enough time for this.
I therefore finally decided to devote all my time to translation and
started to translate for various customers.
I do not have a strictly specified field of expertise. I translate both
general and specialised texts – e.g. economics, construction, health,
sports, law, business correspondence and exceptional literature
(amongst others, I have translated a book on Leonardo da Vinci and
books on Psychology, Architecture, Linguistics and Spirituality).
I do, however, only avoid highly technical and medical translations -
if I do not understand the text in the Czech language, I am unable to
translate it responsibly enough into another language. I also do not
offer official translations.
Recently,
due to a gradual increase of
work, I also cooperate with
other translators. Instead of rejecting work, due to my work-load, I
quite generously supply any excess translation orders to several
well-tested translators and so everyone is happy... My Approach
to Translation:
As I am a “freelancer”, I am available for translations at almost any
time, including urgent Express translations by return.
I
always endeavour to create a second original, merely in another
language version. I always obtain from you the maximum information on
the translated theme so that my translation matches any given field in
style and terminology.
Every translation is a challenge to me,
as well as a new source of
information – I am always pleased to learn something new, so I keep my
thoughts entirely focused on the translated text. Sometimes the text is
easy, sometimes I spend half a day on a single paragraph!
Nothing
ever comes into existence by itself, it is always necessary to apply
one’s own time, energy and focused attention. I can provide a free quotation for any
translation order on the basis
of the source text sent in advance. The calculation of the translation
price in advance is your assurance of the final cost of translation.
Because I am not a translation agency, I can offer more flexible prices
for translation.
